Which Bible Translation Do You Prefer?

I’m conducting a quick unofficial experiment of my own…

“Which Bible Translation Do You Prefer?”

I’ve created a POLL HERE.

[Wordpress doesn't allow javascript, otherwise I would have been able to include the actual poll in this post.]

Update: Seeds Family Worship Discount!

This is an update to my earlier post.

If you use the following coupon:  JAMES09 – when you purchase a CD from Seeds Family Worship, you get 20% off.

If 10 people purchase using that coupon code – the James Gang get a free CD as well. :-)   Yes, this is somewhat hedonisticly motivated!  But you’ll be getting great songs for your kids or grandkids that are straight Scripture verses set to memorable and catchy tunes.

Enjoy!

Wenatchee Fire

I stepped outside at 6:50am this morning and saw large billows of black smoke rolling up, it looked like just a few blocks east of my house. Turns out, it was a fully engulfed warehouse building in downtown Wenatchee.

Up on Up

Erin and I took Grace and Ben to see the latest Pixar movie “Up”.  Umm…for the record, we don’t and won’t be doing many “family movie nights” at the cinema…$$$…wow…we’ll call it part of an early Father’s Day gift…  Aside from the cost of going, overall, we all really enjoyed it and found several redeemable qualities about it.  (Ben got a little scared at a couple points, dropped a few Skittles one time, but recovered well and finished strong).

First, here’s the official blurb from Pixar (which doesn’t do it justice in my opinion):

From Disney•Pixar comes Up, a comedy adventure about 78-year-old balloon salesman Carl Fredricksen, who finally fulfills his lifelong dream of a great adventure when he ties thousands of balloons to his house and flies away to the wilds of South America. But he discovers all too late that his biggest nightmare has stowed away on the trip: an overly optimistic 8-year-old Wilderness Explorer named Russell.“  (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/up/)

The quick list of things we liked about it and lessons we could draw from it, which we discussed on the way home, include (on the positive side):

  1. Conveys strong honor on marriage, depicting a life-long satisfying marriage, including a faithful, loving husband
  2. Reveals how our society easily misunderstands, pushes aside, and underestimates the elderly
  3. Encourages “getting off the porch” and going on an adventure, taking action
  4. Teaches children to show honor/respect to elders
  5. Values children through depicting a family who wanted but couldn’t have children…and a family that didn’t want the one they had…
  6. Incorporates positive intergenerational relationship/mentoring – a “walking with the wise” quality to it
  7. Encourages “adoptive” parenting/grandparenting and shows compassion on children who have been affected by divorce and absentee fathersup_l
  8. Exposes the unnecessary value we place on “stuff”
  9. Depicts financial “realities” of life and responsibility in a positive light
  10. Some talking dogs have really funny voices…and 3-D stuff is cool…ok, this one was a throw away to round out a nice Top 10

Just get ready to catch a few flying Skittles from a jumpy4 year old, who might crawl in your lap for a few minutes.  But we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it for family movie night.

Don’t forget the popcorn.
